MANHATTAN — The Manhattan Fire Protection District recently opened a new fire station in the northern part of its coverage area, holding a ceremony and public tours of the building.
The district said it chose the location based on call-volume data it had been studying, and that it moved forward when the opportunity arose for the park district to purchase its former station.
The new building was designed around response and operations, according to the district. Firefighters now have individual bunks, which the district said matters for sleep in a field where sleep deprivation is common and sound decision-making is essential.
The apparatus bay is larger and has clear pathways. At the former Park Street station, the district said, the bay became cramped, and firefighters pulling on gear to respond to a call bumped into one another and had to work around each other to reach their positions.
The garage doors are bifold, which the district said open faster and free overhead space because no door sits above the apparatus.
The district thanked residents who attended the ceremony, toured the station or stopped by, and said it plans to open the building again for station tours, community events, promotional ceremonies and gatherings for firefighters’ families.
