State reps warn against electing socialist-endorsed candidates on the state level

State representatives warn what the presence of Democratic Socialists of America-endorsed candidates could mean for the nation this election, especially as endorsements have reached the state level while socialist principles are having a negative impact on crime rates and taxes in these states.

Michigan State Rep. Bill G. Schuette told The Center Square exclusively: “As the Senate race between Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers gets all the media oxygen, Michigan voters should remember what’s at stake closer to home.”

“Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the Michigan Senate, while Republicans hold a six-seat majority in the House,” Schuette said.

“Every seat is on the ballot this November, and among those races are DSA-endorsed candidates,” Schuette said. “The rightful criticisms of Abdul are warranted, but DSA at the state level deserves just as much scrutiny.”

“Michigan families and local communities do not want the police abolished, higher taxes, or unfettered immigration,” Schuette said.

“Voters should take a close look at these state races and stop the DSA agenda before it takes root in Lansing,” Schuette said.

In Michigan, Mike Rogers and socialist-leaning Abdul El-Sayed face each other in the race for U.S. Senate.

Meanwhile, Oregon state Rep. Lucetta Elmer told The Center Square exclusively that “Democrats have held a trifecta in Oregon for 18 years, and steadily we’ve seen an increase in the cost of living, high crime rates, and burdensome taxes.”

“If the last 18 years have taught Oregon anything, it’s that Democrats will not solve these problems, and the Democratic Socialists of America will only send us further Left,” Elmer said.

“Electing DSA candidates will only exacerbate the issues our communities are facing while they campaign on increasing taxes and defunding law enforcement,” Elmer said. “It’s time for change in Oregon and public officials who will produce real solutions for constituents.”

Voters in Michigan and Oregon are given the choice of voting for Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) endorsed candidates this election.

In Michigan, Chris Gilmer-Hill is running for state representative in District 8, and Dylan Wegela is running for re-election as state representative in District 26. Both men have been endorsed by the DSA.

In its endorsement of Gilmer-Hill, DSA described the candidate as “a lifelong Detroiter, environmental activist, and union member” and stated he is “ready to fight for housing protections, single-payer healthcare, and for publicly owned utilities.”

Wegela is referred to as DSA’s “comrade” in its endorsement of the candidate, with DSA stating that Wegela is committed to “fighting for a world where people have the dignity of healthcare, housing, and food.”

Neither Hill nor Wegela responded to The Center Square when seeking comment multiple times.

In Oregon, Tammy Carpenter – a self-proclaimed “proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America” according to her website – is running for state representative in District 27, and Lesly Muñoz is running for re-election as state representative in District 22. Both women are DSA-endorsed.

Muñoz describes herself as “a working-class mother, a labor organizer, and a democratic socialist” running to reorganize the economy, according to her website.

From California to New York and Florida to Indiana, few states are untouched by DSA-endorsed candidates or ballot initiatives, according to the DSA’s website.

The Center Square reached out to Abdul El-Sayed’s press team as well as Mike Rogers’. Neither responded by publication time.
