FRANKFORT — A lightning strike to a chimney caused a house fire in the 20600 block of Eagle Bluff Court on the evening of Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, the Frankfort Fire Protection District said.

The district said it was dispatched at approximately 7:06 p.m. for a reported structure fire after multiple callers reported fire and smoke coming from the roof of the home as an electrical storm moved through the area. Companies confirmed a working structure fire at the address, according to the district.

Truck 71 arrived to find fire showing from the roof near the chimney, with the heaviest involvement toward the rear of the residence, the district said. The lone occupant, a juvenile who was home at the time, had evacuated before fire companies arrived. Crews advanced multiple hoselines and brought the fire under control, and no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul on the second floor and in concealed spaces to confirm the fire had not extended further, the district said. The residence sustained fire damage to the roof and second floor, along with water and overhaul damage throughout.

Frankfort units that responded included Truck 71; Engines 72 and 73; Ambulances 71, 72 and 75; Battalion Chief 71; Chiefs 71 and 73; and Inspector 71.

The district thanked mutual aid companies from Lockport, Manhattan, Matteson, Mokena, Monee, New Lenox, Orland, South Chicago Heights, Tinley Park and University Park, which assisted on scene and provided station coverage.

The district said a lightning strike can ignite a fire inside an attic, wall or other concealed space with no immediate smoke or flame showing, and it urged residents whose home is struck by lightning to get everyone out and call 911 even if nothing appears to be burning.
